Happy New Year! We took an extended break, but are now in full swing for the new year.
Thank you for taking the time to read preneurWorld news. Our theme for the new year, "Business is Personal," carries over from last year. Over the coming months we will be focus on creating resources, tools, and products that will assist entrepreneurs to improve their customers' experience at every "touchpoint." Our goal is to integrate social media with the human touch in order to accomplish a more complete and satisfying customer relationship.
Most marketing "experts" fall short in the goals and expectations for most marketing efforts. Rather than a goal of building lists, generating repeat sales, or creating "fans," our intent is to help you get your customers to encourage their networks of family, friends, colleagues, and fans, to purchase your products or services. In other words, to morph your "fans" into your sales force. Our upcoming seminar will show you how.
A spot in our "Prosper in Spite of the Assault on Your Business" series at the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce can be reserved on our website. (Remember, San Rafael Chamber members get a 60% discount!) The seminar is limited to 20 people.
We are offering a 15% off New Year Special for both of these workshops, now through midnight Sunday, January 8th, 2012.

| The Book of the Week
Onward:
How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul
By
Howard Schultz with Joanne Gordon

Onward is the story of Howard Schultz's return as ceo (he uses lowercase for CEO) of Starbucks. His resumption as ceo was due to his concern that Starbucks had lost its focus on the customer, instead focusing on expansion, margins, and profit, while sacrificing the unique Starbucks experience. He is adamant that the small of freshly ground coffee greet each customer upon entering, that the expresso machines are of a type low enough that the barristas can engage with the customers, and that Starbucks partners are in service to their customers first.
Schultz is clear that for Starbucks to remain successful each store must be received by its neighborhood as a part of the community, rather than a chain operation. His book his a lesson applicable to most any business, regardless of size.
Although the book is somewhat self-aggrandizing, it is nonetheless valuable in its content. And it is an easy read.

Quote of the Week
"But for this organization [as Starbucks reorganizes]....If we did not also feel, if we did not have conviction in our values and believe that we really were in the business of human connection--on our farms, in our offices, in our stores, in our communities--then the company was doomed."

Networking Tip
Every businessperson needs to network as one way to generate business. What makes some people more effective at networking than others?
Networking consists of: going to networking events; meeting people; collectin g business cards; entering the contact information in a database; and perhaps putting the names on your e-newsletter list. What else there to do?
Effective networking requires taking a few additional steps, if you want to be a savvy networkerTM!
Because business is personal, it includes networking. To differentiate yourself and your business from the pack requires the personal touch. The savvy networkerTM knows networking is more than just having one or two get togethers.
Three of the easiest next steps are:
- Show real interest in the people you meet. What can you do for them?
- Establish a willingness to work with each. Are you a good match?
- Stay in touch. Cultivate your contacts, and they can become strong relationships.
Making those three steps a part of your networking will not only put you ahead of the others, but also better enable you to leverage your contacts. Everyone likes referrals, because they are the easiest, least problematic, and least costly way to generate sales.
