CIP TO OFFER FREE COUPLES COUNSELING SESSIONS IN FEBRUARY
Community Institute for Psychotherapy, a nonprofit agency, will offer free initial consultations through its Couples Therapy Program during the month of February; additional sessions are available on a sliding scale. CIP offices are located in central San Rafael, 1330 Lincoln Avenue, close to 101 and public transportation. For more information, call (415) 459-5999, ext. 101; to make an appointment, call (415) 459-5999 ext. 102.
Among the most common issues for which couples seek help are money, parenting, communication, and intimacy. "Many couples find themselves having the same arguments over and over," explains CIP Executive and Clinical Director Robin Berenson, PhD, MFT. "When that begins to happen, it's often useful to consult a counselor who can help partners find workable alternatives." Early intervention is important. "Couples shouldn't feel that it has to be a huge crisis. In fact, the earlier they seek help, the more easily answers are found. It's when people don't seek help, that situations can escalate and become far more serious." She urges anyone who feels his or her relationship might benefit to make an appointment.
Therapy is especially important for those couples experiencing verbal abuse, high conflict, and/or potential violence, all of which can seriously harm a family. "It's important that they get help right away," according to Dr. Berenson.
"Couples who come to CIP for therapy are often in gridlock," explains the program's creator and director, Marianne Haissman Stefancic, ATR-BC, MFT. "They find themselves entrenched in complicated and confusing processes. Intern-therapists trained in diagnosis and interventions will help couples sort out their complex experiences, and focus on differentiation, communication, and self-development within the relationship."
Founded in 1977, CIP has a dual mission: to provide quality counseling and psychotherapy on a sliding scale to families, couples, and individuals; and a rigorous training program for intern-therapists earning hours toward licensure. For more than 30 years, CIP has played a vital role in the continuum of care in the Marin community.
