(Dec. 12, 2010) NOVATO, Calif. - A double James Beard Foundation Award nominee for 2011, sommelier Rajat Parr shares secrets of wine from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, in a benefit event at Fresh Starts Cooking School in Novato.
Parr serves as wine director for the Mina Group and its signature restaurant, Michael Mina. Along with developing wine lists for all Mina Group restaurants, he launched his own label called Parr Selections in 2007 and has begun a wine-making venture. His first book, "Secrets of the Sommeliers: How to think and drink like America's top wine professionals," was written with Jordan Mackay. Released this year, it was named the best book in the Beverage category by the James Beard Foundation. Guests will enjoy insights from this top-flight sommelier, as well as a light dinner designed by Chef Jason Berthold at RN74, a Mina Group restaurant. These two special courses will be: prawn cocktail with kumquats and arugula, followed by gnocchi with mushroom ragout and hazelnuts. A native of Calcutta, Rajat Parr credits his uncle in London with introducing him to fine wines. He served as apprentice to renowned sommelier Larry Stone at Rubicon in San Francisco and attended the Culinary Institute of America. Ticket price of $59 includes food and beverages; all proceeds benefit shelter and job-training programs at Homeward Bound.
